The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of Agriculture are alerting residents: lanternflies are starting to hatch across the state.
These invasive pests have already been spotted in several counties, with the first reports coming from Charles County and new sightings popping up around Annapolis. State officials are warning that lanternflies pose a serious threat to Maryland’s trees, plants, and crops.
Residents are being asked to stay vigilant — especially when traveling. Be sure to check your vehicles, trailers, and outdoor equipment for any signs of lanternflies before moving to a new area. These bugs can easily hitch a ride and spread even farther if we’re not careful.
To help track and control the spread, Maryland has launched an online reporting site where you can submit sightings and photos: Click here to report a lanternfly.
Officials are urging everyone across Maryland to pitch in and report any sightings. Together, we can help protect our state's natural resources from this growing threat.
